Junior Ian Rice went 3-for-3 with two homers and five RBIs, and sophomore DJ Sekiya pitched a three-hit shutout as HPA blanked perennial Division I power Hilo 13-0 Saturday in Waimea.
The contest ended after four and a half innings because of the league’s 10-run mercy rule.
Koa Ellis and Mike Nakahara both went 2-for-3, and Kalan Camero was 2-for-2 for Division II HPA (1-0 BIIF, 1-0 overall), which had 11 hits.
Sekiya, who walked one batter and hit another, had no strikeouts.
“He didn’t overpower anybody,’’ HPA coach Jordan Hayslip said of Sekiya. “We just played good defense behind him, and he had very good control.
“He mixed his speeds and locations really well.’’
Rice blasted a three-run homer in the first inning, then highlighted an eight-run third with a two-run shot.
“He always hits the ball well — he just got a hold of those two today,’’ Hayslip said.
Senior Kian Kurokawa took the loss for Hilo (0-1, 1-1).

Keaau 11, Kohala 2: Maleko Remlinger struck out 11 and held Kohala to two hits over six innings as the host Cougars beat the Cowboys in the season opener for both teams.
Remlinger, a senior right-hander, allowed two hits and two runs, both earned, while walking three. Byron Cachola had three hits, a run batted in and scored twice to lead Keaau (1-0, 1-0) at the plate. Rylan Martines (triple, three runs) and Keian Kanetani each added two hits, Justin Quesada drove in two runs, and Jonathan Segovia had a double.
Jeremiah Kanehailua-Torres, who started and went 3 1/3 innings, took the loss for Kohala (0-1, 0-1). He gave up seven hits and six runs.
Kanehailua-Torres also had both of Kohala’s hits and drove in a run.

Kamehameha-Hawaii 14, Honokaa 4: Micah Carter went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs, and Chad Teshima had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Warriors at Wong Stadium.
Kamehameha (1-0, 1-0) pounded out 18 hits agains three Honokaa pitchers. Kupono Decker, Matthew Chun and Daylen Calicdan each had two hits and two RBIs.
Decker pitched three innings to get the win. He allowed two hits and four runs, all in the second inning, striking out two and walking three.
Ikaika Juan went three innings and took the loss for Honokaa (0-1, 0-1). He allowed seven runs on 11 hits.

Kamehameha 34, Pahoa 8: The host Warriors took advantage of 20 Dagger walks for a nonconference win in Division II at home.
Gayla Ha-Cabebe ripped an RBI double, and Kekailani Wong Yuen and Elizabeth Kia added two-run singles.
